Briggs Hunt, Head Coach of the 1960 U.S. Olympic Greco-Roman Wrestling Team, has died at St. John's Hospital here following heart surgery. He was 64.
Hunt, a 1934 graduate of UCLA, served as the Bruins' head wrestling coach for 30 years until his resignation in 1965.
He remained in the UCLA physical education department until his death Saturday. Hunt is survived by his widow Eleanor, his two daughters, Marjorie and Peggy, and a sister.

Wrestling his first three years in Oklahoma, Briggs finished his high school career in California, then wrestled for the University of Iowa. He was a leader in the development of wrestling in Southern California since 1934. He coached Freestyle, Greco-Roman and collegiate wrestling at UCLA. He served 25 years as chairman of the Southern California AAU Wrestling commmittee; a member of the NCAA Rules Committee; a member of the United States Olympic Committee; a referee at the 1956 Olympic Games, the 1959 Pan Am Games and the1962 World Championships. Briggs was selected as the Head Greco-Roman Coach for the USA in the 1960 Olympics and authored one of the first Greco-Roman books in America.

Beginning school in Oklahoma, Briggs Hunt finished his high school athletic career playing football at Los Angeles High School. At UCLA he continued his football career, but also became very active in wrestling. He was the 1934-35 Pacific Coast Conference and National AAU lightweight wrestling champion. As the 1936 Olympic Games approached, Hunt was considered a good bet to make the U.S. team. Unfortunately, two weeks before the trials he was shot in the back in a hunting accident and failed to make the U.S. team. Hunt became the UCLA wrestling coach in 1935 and remained in that position thru 1940 went World War II called. Returning from military service, he resumed his UCLA coaching duties and remained in that position thru 1969. He finally reached the Olympic Games in 1956, serving as a referee. In 1960 he became the U.S. Olympic Greco-Roman wrestling coach. Briggs Hunt is a member of the California Wrestling Hall of Fame.
