U.S. Congressman. He attended the E. E. Barney Academy, taught school while he studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1847 and commenced to practice law in Dayton, Ohio. He was a member of the Ohio State House of Representatives, (1852-53) and a delegate to the Democratic National Conventions, (1860, 76). In 1891, he was elected as a Democrat to the Fifty-second and Fifty-third Congresses, serving until his death.
