MEMORIAL SERVICES WILL BE HELD TODAY FOR LEE EDWARD TRAVIS
Daily News of Los Angeles (CA) — Sunday, October 18, 1987
Memorial services will be held today for Dr. Lee Edward Travis of Encino, a pioneer in speech pathology.

Travis died of heart failure on Oct. 9 at the Tarzana Medical Center. He was 91.

Travis' career in psychology included positions as a professor at the USC and the University of Iowa, chairman of the psychology department at Iowa, and as dean of the Graduate School of Psychology at Fuller Theological Seminary, Pasadena.

"He was a very positive, inquiring individual," said Dr. John Knott, professor emeritus of psychology at the University of Iowa. "He stimulated other people to think, ask questions, and find the answers to their questions themselves."

A native of Champion, Neb., Travis earned his bachelor's and master's degrees and doctorate in psychology from the University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa.

After receiving his doctorate, Travis joined the faculty at Iowa in 1927 and was respected for both his teaching and research work, according to Dr. Donald B. Lindsley, professor of psychology at UCLA and a former student of Travis.

Travis was head of the University of Iowa's psychology department for a year before he joined the faculty at USC in 1938, where he worked until World War II.

He served as a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army Air Forces Medical Corps during the war as officer-in-charge of psychological services at several military hospitals in Europe.

Travis continued at USC after the war until 1965, when he became the founding dean of the School of Psychology at Fuller, said Hart.

Travis' survivors include his wife Lysa, his sons Knight, Paul, and Dwayne, daughter Pat Bennett, 12 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held at 2:30 p.m. today at Bel-Air Presbyterian Church, Bel-Air.
