Polish general and Maréchal de France, nephew of Stanislaus II, the last King of Poland. In 1807 he became minister of war of the grand duchy of Warsaw. He led Polish troops in Napoleon's successful campaign against Austria in 1809 and in the emperor's less successful campaign against Russia in 1812. During the Battle of Leipzig in October 1813 Napoleon made him Maréchal de France for his bravery. After Napoleons victory he was supposed to become the next King of Poland by Napoleon's grace. He covered the withdrawal of the French troops after the Battle. He was wounded. The bridge over the Elster river he was supposed to cross was blown up. He was on the left side of the river with 2,000 of his men. He rode into the river and drowned. His body was found five days later. He was buried in the councillor crypt on Alter Johannisfriedhof in Leipzig. His body was moved on August 17 1814 to Warsaw and was buried in 1816 in Krakow. Cause of Death: Drowned
