King of Scotland. Born, Donnchad mac Maíl Coluim of the house that reigned on the northern part of Britain from 1034 to 1040 and from 1058 to 1290, eldest of eleven children of Malcolm III, also had Icelandic origins as his mother was a Finnsdottir of the Orkney Islands. His youth was quite troubled due to the ancestral conflicts between England and Scotland. It was for this cause that he remained hostage of William the Conqueror (1072). In 1087, after the death of King William he was freed and even admitted to the English court. His imprisonment conditioned his succession in favor of his brother Edward and his uncle Donald. However, he also ascended the throne due to the death of his father for murder, and of the brother, killed in the Battle of Alnwick (1093). Duncan II reigned for a short time and died tragically murdered in an ambush organized by his father's brother.
