Paul met his future wife, Alice, in Philadelphia when he was in the Navy. They were married and their two children, Dorothy and John, were born in Philadelphia. Shortly after the birth of their son Paul was transferred to New London, Connecticut where they lived until he retired and they moved to Los Angeles, California. Paul served for sixteen years in the Navy and retired as Chief Gunners Mate. In 1921 he was on a battle ship which sailed to the West Coast and was decommissioned in Washington state. After he rejoined the family in Los Angeles he built a 2 bedroom home on 82nd street and worked in one of the movie studios building scenery until Alice died in 1925.

After Alice's death Paul and the children traveled to Niagara Falls, New York via the Panama Canal. They lived for a short time with Alice's brother Sam and his family in Niagara Falls, New York, before moving to Wisconsin to live with his family. While in Wisconsin Paul married his second wife and they all returned to Southern California.

Paul was shot and three days later died after being shot by a police officer in Long Beach, California. According to his son, John, an inquest was held. John testified and requested that the officer be investigated but that did not happen. Several years later there was an article in the Long Beach Press Telegram that the officer was fired for a similar incident. About two years after Paul's death a man approached John and claimed to have been a witness within 50 feet of the shooting. He stated that Paul was holding a rifle but there was no round in the chamber. He was afraid to testify that the officer put a round in the chamber so he never came forward.
