Uncle Short's father, John Henry Osborn, died from typhoid fever. Short was only nine years old and was also sick and many thought that he would also die. He recovered only to be asked to do the work of a grown man. In order to help the family he plowed fields with the mule. He had to stretch up to hold the plow handles so the neighbors started referring to him as Shorty. The nickname was from admiration not derision as they knew why he was working so.
