Benjamin Ignatius Hayes

His grave and tombstone were removed from the Old Calvary Cemetery around 1929. Most of the bodies were removed and placed in New Calvary Cemetery in a single grave. His probably was since there was a marker.

"Ignatius" was his confirmation name, which he never really used at all during his life, though he would want me to tell it's for the other St. Ignatius.

Shortly after ruling in the Biddy Mason case that taking former slaves, now free in California, back to a slave State was kidnapping (prior to Dred Scott), one of the former slaves rushed to save the life of his son Chauncey who had fallen from a carriage. He knew then that Providence was telling him he did the right thing.

Though both his wives predeceased him, he said he never felt alone as their memory would return from wells deep.
