From 1823 until his death in 1843, Henry Miller was the proprietor of Miller's Tavern (now known as Old South Mountain Inn) atop Turner's Gap. His tavern uniquely served as a wagon stand as well as a stagecoach stop for the heavy traffic passing on the National Road after it was surfaced in the 1820's. In the years that followed, the inn was visited by many Washington leaders, including Daniel Webster and Henry Clay, and several Presidents. For Clay and Webster particularly, it was a favorite resting spot.

After Miller's death in 1843, the tavern stayed in the family until his children sold it to Edward Boteler in 1855.

Obituary that appeared in the Baltimore Sun, dated Feb. 13, 1843:
"Mr. Henry Miller, who kept a tavern on the top of the mountain between Middletown and Boonsboro, Md., died suddenly on Monday last, of a disease of the heart."

Obituary in the Hagerstown Torch Light, dated Feb. 16, 1843:
Henry Miller "died suddenly, on top of the mountain, three miles east of Boonsboro."
