Philippine Insurrection Medal of Honor Recipient. He served as a Private in the United States Army in Company I, 1st North Dakota Volunteer Infantry. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for action on May 16, 1899 near San Isidro, Luzon, Philippine Islands. His citation reads "With 21 other scouts charged across a burning bridge, under heavy fire, and completely routed 600 of the enemy who were entrenched in a strongly fortified position."
