Catherine C. Cate was born in Hardwick, VT, the daughter of Don A. and Sadie E. Cate. "While in grade school she read every book in that library, and actually became village librarian while in the ninth grade...In high school she did general reporting for the local weekly newspaper. In 1918, to help win World War I, she came to Washington, D.C., as an employee at the National Bureau of Standards. Catherine C. Cate married William Weber Coblentz on 10 Jun 1924 in Washington D.C. They had two children who died as infants: Catherine Joan and David William (b. 24 Feb 1929, d. 25 Feb 1929).
