Albert enlisted early in May 1861 and was mustered into the Union Army at Camp Andrew, West Roxbury, MA on May 25, 1861 for three years. He was a private of Co. E, 2nd Mass. Infantry and was in all the earlier engagements of the regiment. At Winchester, VA on May 25, 1862, he was wounded through his arm and the shot ball afterwards struck a comb in the pocket of his blouse, glanced off, thus averting a more serious, if not fatal wound. At Cedar Mountain, VA on August 9, 1862, he was wounded in the face by a pistal ball or buck shot. At Antietam, MD on September 17, 1862, he was severely wounded in the left hand. He was discharged on December 6, 1862, for disability, from the General Hospital, Harrisburg, PA.
