"The Victor of Aspern," Archduke Charles of the Habsburg line. Son of Emperor Leopold II. Archduke Karl defeated Napoleon, who had not yet lost a battle, at Aspern (Essling), Austria, on 21-22 May 1809 (Napoleon later beat the Austrians at Wagram). Karl is honored by a heroic statue in front of the Habsburg Palace (Hofburg) in Vienna.
