Funeral services for George L. Smith, 34, Faribault attorney, were held at the Immaculate Conception church on Saturday, December 27, at 10 a. m. Burial was in Calvary cemetery. Mr. Smith died at the Northfield City hospital on Thursday, September 20. Pallbearers were Donald O'Brien, William Andrews, Wayne Hultquist, Cy Stadler, Dr. R. W. Maertz, and Courtney Slife. Members of General Shields Assembly, Fourth Degree KNights of Columbus, formed an honor guard at the funeral. Graveside rites were conducted by Faribault Post 43, the American Legion. The escort was commanded by Sgt. A. E. Bean, and color bearers were Ed Peterson and James Roach. Color guards were Ralph Merrill and Arthur Roberts. Serving on the firing squad were Jack Kenney, Martin Timmers, Bert Murphy, Roy Winjum, Donald Jandro and Donald Aberle, Buglers were Irvin Ostrom and John Glassco. Escorts were Commander F. F. Schuck and Adjutant E. E. Mentz.

Born in Faribault May 12, 1917, he was named for his grandfather, a former Faribault Mayor and judge of the Rice County Probate Court. He was graduated in 1935 from Faribault High school, where he was captain of the basketball and football teams. He was also a member of the High school band and later, of the Faribault Municipal band. Mr. Smith was graduated from the College of Law of the University of Minnesota in 1941, ranking sixth in his class. While a student at the University of Minnesota he was a member of the football team until seriously injured. Immediately after his graduation his marriage to Mary Kay Thomas took place on June 17, 1941. He passed the Minnesota Bar Examinations and was admitted to the practice of law September 22, 1941, after which he entered into a law partnership with his father, Lucius A. Smith. From 1942 to 1945 the deceased was on active duty with the United States Navy, much of the time as commanding officer of a subchaser. At the time of his discharge he held the rank of Lieutenant. He was a member of the Rice County Bar association, the Minnesota Bar association, the Southeastern Minnesota Bar association and the Fifth Judicial Bar association, of which he was president of the time of his death. He formerly served as president of the Rice County chapter, American Red Cross. Mr. Smith was a member of the Faribault Lions club, Faribault Lodge 1166, Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks, Faribault Post 43, the American Legion, and the Faribault Golf and Country club. He also held memberships in the Immaculate Conception church, Faribault Council 889, Knights of Columbus, and the General Shields assembly, Knights of Columbus Fourth Degree.

Surviving are his wife; two daughters, Jill, 6, and Lynn, 2 1/2; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lucius A. Smith; two brothers Bruce of Northfield and Dr. Wayne Smith of Excelsior; two sisters, Olive of Rochester and June of Minneapolis; and his grandmother, Mrs. George L. Smith, Sr. A large number of attorneys of the Fifth Judicial District attended the funeral. Also in attendance were attorneys from the Twin Cities and other parts of Minnesota, and members of the Lions club, Elks club, Knights of Columbus, Country club and City and County Officials.

Among those from out of town attending the funeral were: Mrs. Edna Thomas and Mr. and Mrs. Horace Mott of Albert Lea; Mr. and Mrs. Edward O'Gara and children, Edward and Maureen, of Minneapolis; Associate Justice of the Supreme Court Frank T. Gallagher of St. Paul; District Judge Axel B. Anderson of Owatonna; Henry M. Gallagher and Frank G. Klesler of Waseca.
