Singer, Actress. Born Marie Gabrielle Elise Cairo, daughter of a textile merchant, she was one of six children (she and two other sisters reached adulthood). She adopted the stage name of Gaby Deslys and started singing in Paris while taking singing and dancing classes. She gained some notice in 1904 and in 1906 was invited to England where she became an instant success. Upon her return to Paris she starred in the famed Folies Bergere. In 1911 she went to New York at the invitation of Schubert, where she was an immense hit. For the next eight years she performed in many countries gaining critical acclaim. She died February of 1920 after a few months' illness. Her funeral service was held at Notre-Dame de Grace de Passy and she was taken to Marseille and buried in the family vault. She was portrayed in the 1954 star-parade film, "Deep In My Heart" by Russian ballerina Tamara Toumanova.
