Actor. Born in The Bronx, New York, he started his motion picture career in 1911, receiving a break into the business when he was introduced to film director D.W. Griffith. About 1921, he grew into one of the most popular Western stars of the early motion pictures, occasionally writing and directing films as well. In the early 1930s, he moved slowly into character roles and was nominated for an Academy Award (Oscar) for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in the film "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington" (1939). He was in 260 films from 1911 to 1947.
