According to the finding aid of the Spear Family Papers at the Huntington Library, San Marino, CA: Alexander Fulton Spear (1800-1853) came to California from Maine in 1849. His son, Alexander Fulton Spear (1827-1900), a ship captain, settled in San Francisco in 1872. His grandson, Lewis Eugene Spear (1867-1953), organized the Pacific Steel & Wire Co. in San Francisco and later moved to Los Angeles and established the Pacific Wire Rope Co. in 1909.

According to Lewis E. Spear’s obituary in the Fresno Bee of March 4, 1953, Spear founded the Pacific Steel and Wire Company in Oakland in 1890. He sold the company to the United States Steel Corporation in 1908 and the next year founded the Pacific Wire Rope Company, which he headed until his death.

Lewis married Clara Whitney 21 Feb 1893 in Alameda CA.
