The Mt. Vernon News (December 26, 1902) reported Eva and Ira's marriage:
"Miss Eva Dougherty and Mr. Ira Mabbott were united in marriage Monday morning at Mitchell, the Rev. Father Shae performing the ceremony. It has been whispered around for some time that these young folks were contemplating a union of this sort and now that it has come about, the News takes great pleasure in announcing the fact to its readers. This young couple are well known in Mt. Vernon, their parents of whom are among the old and respected residents of this county.
The bride, Miss Eva Dougherty, is the youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Dougherty, who reside three miles northwest of town, and is a charming young lady in every way and is sure to bring sunshine wherever her presence is felt. The groom, Mr. Ira Mabbott, is a son of Mr. and Mrs. H. M. Mabbott, residents of this city, and until recently, engaged in the hardware and furniture business, and is a young man full of ginger and progressiveness which is fast advancing him in the business circle of Mt. Vernon. He is proprietor of the Star restaurant tonsorial [barbering and hairdressing] parlors besides having an interest in the Star restaurant and is enjoying a nice trade in these lines. The News extends hearty congratulations to the young couple and wishes them many Merry Xmas' and Happy New Years."
