At age 22 Nellie married Charles Baker Johnson of San Francisco, where they first lived. In 1920 they moved to Alameda, where they lived until the late 1930s, when they moved to Santa Clara. They had two sons: Charles and Curtis. Charles Sr was an electrical engineer and was a consultant for the construction of the Oakland Bay Bridge.
Charles died in 1959, and Nellie died less than a year later at age 86.
