George I. Oeste, 85, a retired educator, died Tuesday at Rolling Hill Hospital, Elkins Park. He lived at the Philadelphia Protestant Home.
Dr. Oeste was a social studies teacher at Olney High School from 1931 until 1946. He was vice principal at Germantown High School from 1947 until 1961 and at Washington High from 1961 until 1968.
During those years, he also taught history at summer and night schools at Temple University. He taught briefly at Indiana University of Pennsylvania and Bucks County Community College.
From 1968 until 1977, he was a professor of American and Latin American studies and head of the social science department at Allentown College.
A graduate of Frankford High School, Dr. Oeste attended the University of Pennsylvania, where he received his bachelor's degree in 1929, a master's degree in 1932 and a doctorate in 1961 in Latin American studies.
Dr. Oeste's dissertation on John Randolph Clay, America's first diplomat, was published in 1966 by the University of Pennsylvania Press.
He was past president of the Mid-States and Pennsylvania Councils for Social Studies.
Dr. Oeste was moderator of the United Church of Christ, Philadelphia Association, in 1970, and secretary of the Pennsylvania Southeast Conference of the United Church of Christ from 1974 to 1976.
He was scoutmaster of Troop 307 in Tioga from 1929 to 1959.
He is survived by his wife, Florence Langrock Oeste; daughters, Ruth Krauss and Dorothy Whitlock; son, George F.; a sister; eight grandchildren, and a great-grandson.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in the chapel of the Philadelphia Protestant Home, 6500 Tabor Rd. Burial will be in Lawnview Cemetery, Rockledge
