"Bill" William Jason Rowell, 94, a resident of Dallas died Friday, March 30, 2012 at the Dallas Retirement Village. He was born on May 28, 1917 in Rickreall, Oregon the son of William and Emma Byers Rowell. He went to school in Rickreall and entered the US Navy in 1934 serving for four years. He was stationed on the USS Texas until 1938 when he was discharged. When the bombing of Pearl Harbor took place Bill reenlisted into the Navy on December 7, 1941 and was placed on the USS Bancroft returning in 1945. Upon his return he went to work for BarBQ, Gerlinger, Burlbachs Machine Shop and in Valsetz for the mill.

He married Wilma Davenport in 1948 and she had two children Marlene and Douglas. Bill and Wilma had three children Stanley, Leslie and Lori. Wilma died in 1962 shortly after Lori was born. He met Claudine Black in November of 1963 and they courted until they married on May 15, 1965 in Metzer, Oregon at the United Methodist Church. Bill enlisted in the Navy reserves and retired after 20 years in 1975. In 1979, after many years of working as a machinist for Cranston Machinery in Oak Grove he retired. Following retirement they moved to Christmas Valley for a few years. In 1991, they decided to make Dallas their home. Bill enjoyed boating, fishing, hunting, camping and horses. He was a member of the Independence Elks Lodge. Bill was a hard working and honest family man.

He is survived by his wife Claudine of Dallas, sons Stanley, Leslie and daughter Lori and step children Judith, John, Marlene and Douglas along with several grandchildren and many great grandchildren.

A funeral service will begin at 10:00 am Wednesday, April 4th in the Dallas Mortuary Tribute Center with full military honors. Private burial will be in the Willamette National Cemetery in Portland. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Union Gospel Mission in care of the mortuary at 287 SW Washington St. Dallas, Oregon 97338.
