Roman Catholic Pope. Born Girolamo (Jerome) Masci, he was elected on February 15, 1288. He protested his unworthiness for the throne, and was re-elected on February 22, 288. As Pope Nicholas IV, he was intensely interested in missionary projects. He sent the famous Franciscan John of Montecorvino to follow the tracks of Marco Polo and preach Christianity in far-off China. He corresponded with Mongols, Bulgarians, and Tartars. Nicholas IV contributed to the artistic beauty of Rome, building particularly a palace beside Santa Maria Maggiore, the church in which he was buried and where Sixtus V erected an imposing monument to his memory.
