Jeff was born Jefferson Davis Dicken, son of Isham Dicken and unknown 'Davis', possibly Anna, who was living in the household as a housekeeper. ( I am still working on proving this.) He was acknowledged in Isham's will as his natural born son. Sometime before he was 20 and entered into the Civil War, he dropped his Dicken Surname.

Jeff served in the Union Army during the Civil War as a Commissary Sargeant, 37th Kentucky Infantry.

Jeff married Nancy Ann Arterberry 14 Apr 1865 at Tompkinsville, Monroe County, Kentucky. They moved to Texas about 1874-1875. Their children were:

Minasota Buford md George W Wren
Laura N md Edgar H Oliver
Homer Eugene md Mollie E Anderson
Roscoe never married
Rosa A md Jasper Brannan
Mary Kate md Eddie C Hooper
Alice M died at 4 months - Hill County, Texas
John H died at 4 years - Texas
Verah md Peter A Lyon

Family stories of how much loved and respected Jeff and Nancy were. Evidence of many relatives living with Jeff and Nancy as they moved west, grandchildren being born in their home and affidavits acknowleding knowing Jeff and respecting him for purposes of obtaining his pension.

He was committed to Fort Supply with having what we now know as Alzheimers. Listed on death certificate: hardening of the arteries.

There is no headstone for Jefferson but his death certificate shows that he was buried in the Granite City Cemetery.
