In the afternoon of April 6, 2012, Vard was released from his pain from Parkinson's disease to his Father in Heaven. His wife LaJette and loved ones were by his side at home.
He was born in LaPoint, Utah on February 12, 1934 to Bertrand Swain and Fern Elizabeth Gerber. He grew up on a farm with livestock and associated farming activities. The family lived in several locations including Maeser, Lehi, and Roosevelt. Later the family moved to American Fork in 1951.
Vard graduated from American Fork High School in 1952. He attended Utah State University for two years prior to serving an LDS Mission in western Canada. Mr. Swain graduated from USU in 1959 With a BS Degree in Agriculture. He met LaJette Grimm at the university in Logan and they were married in the Salt Lake Temple August 17, 1959. Vard received a Master's Degree from Brigham Young University in 1963.
Vard had a strong foundation in the LDS Church and taught in the seminary system for seven years. He also taught Agricultural Ed. in the public schools. He eventually became a licensed residential and commercial building contractor and had a successful business. Vard and LaJette built their last home in Layton. He loved the area and the people in his ward.
He is survived by his wife, LaJette, his son, Brett and daughter Heather Cordingly, sister, Bertella Aldridge, brothers, Dr. Clark Swain and Keith Swain. He was preceded in death by a sister Sherryl Hassard and a baby brother, Lyle.
A viewing will be held April 12th from 7:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. at Lindquist's Layton Mortuary-1867 N. Fairfield Rd. Layton, UT. A viewing prior to the funeral service will be held April 13th from 9:30 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. at the Forest Park Ward, 2250 E. 2200 N. Layton, UT with funeral Services beginning at 11 a.m. Interment, Lindquist's Memorial Park at Layton, 1867 No. Fairfield Road.
