He was the younger brother of Captain Zebulon Montgomery Pike, famous for naming Pike's Peak on the Expedition he led into the southwest in the years 1806-07. His brother Zebulon later, promoted to Brigadier General during the War of 1812, was mortally wounded in action during the attack on York, Upper Canada (now Toronto, Ontario) and died there on April 27, 1813.
James' first born son, William Montgomery Pike, was born out of wedlock but raise with his siblings. As an adult, William found himself on the ill fated Donner Party in 1846 and was accidentally shot and died in October of 1846. He was reportedly laid to rest in Truckee Meadows, at the foot of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, as the first snows began to fall.
