Poet. She was born in Uppsala and educated by her father, a university lecturer. Anna Maria began to write poetry at an early age and to translate plays and operas for King Gustav III of Sweden. At the age of 23 she was already famous and was accepted into “Utile Dulci,” a cultural elite society in Stockholm. She married Carl Lenngren, editor of the daily newspaper Stockholmsposten and wrote many articles for it anonymously over the years. The couples’ address in central Stockholm became a meeting point for the “Gustavian” writers, where she became well known as an excellent and spiritual hostess. In the mid 1790s she took to writing poetry more seriously, showing some influences of the great troubadour Carl Mikael Bellman, the biggest name in Swedish poetry. They are closer still in death, sharing the ground of the same churchyard. Two years after her death the Swedish Academy published her collected poetry.
