Inventor. He invented and built the first planetarium with the assistance of his father, Thomas Barlow, which they sold in 1944 to Girard College. Although little formal education, he was a trained blacksmith. In 1851, the father-son team built a planetarium that was exhibited at the New York World's Fair. During the American Civil War, he also served in the Confederate Army as Captain of Ordinance under Generals John H. Morgan and Abraham Buford. Other inventions of his were the Breech-loading rifle cannon. He held a patent for a "improved cradle harvester." On May 20, 1842, he married Anastasia Thompson and the couple had eight children.
