POQUOSON - R. Florence Holloway Hartman Freeman, 91, a native of Messick and resident of Poquoson, passed away Saturday, May 28, 2011.
She retired from Dominion Virginia Power (VEPCO) as an Executive Secretary on Aug. 31, 1978. Mrs. Freeman was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church for 30 years, the Ladies Bible Class, and served in many areas of the church. She was formerly a 40 year member of Central United Methodist Church in Hampton where she taught Sunday school, served as Superintendent of the Children's Dept., and served on the Administrative Board of both churches.
Mrs. Freeman was Valedictorian of Poquoson High School Class of 1937, and went on to graduate from the Newport News Business College. She was also a member and past president of the Colonial Place Women's Club of Hampton.
Mrs. Freeman was the widow of John D. T. Hartman Sr. and Joseph E. "Ned" Freeman Sr.; and also preceded in death by her parents, Reginal Manning and Deniza Pauls Holloway; two brothers, William "Chink" Holloway and Rudolph M. "Rudy" Holloway; and stepson, Joseph E. Freeman Jr.
She is survived by her son, John D. T. "Pete" Hartman Jr., and wife, Evelyn of Yorktown; a stepson, William R. Freeman in Kill Devil Hills, N.C.; two grandchildren, J. Scott Hartman and wife, Lynne of Seaford, and Amy H. Newby and husband, Michael of Mechanicsville; four great-grandchildren, Hannah Hartman, Ethan Hartman, Cullen Newby and Garret Newby.
The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 1, at Trinity United Methodist Church, Poquoson, immediately followed by a funeral service at 2:30 p.m. in the church sanctuary by the Rev. Milford C. Rollins and the Rev. Rita A. Callis. Burial will follow at Parklawn Memorial Park, Hampton.
