Photographer. He received recognition as a portrait photographer. A native of Mardin, Armenia-in-Turkey, he became one of Canada's best-known portrait photographers of famous personalities. After moving to Ottawa, Ontario, in 1924 with an uncle, he was sent to be schooled in Sherbrooke, Quebec. After school, he went to Boston, Massachusetts, and became an apprentice to John Garo, but returned to Ottawa in 1932 and opened up his first studio. His work is on display in the Museum of Modern Art in New York and The National Portrait Gallery in London, England. Karsh gained national attention with his portraits from the likes of Winston Churchill, Ernest Hemingway, Grey Owl, Audrey Hepburn, Jacques Lipchitz, Brian Mulroney, Pierre Elliott Trudeau, to Albert Einstein.
