POQUOSON - Barbara E. Dryden, 58, a native of Muskegon County, Mich., and a lifelong resident of Poquoson passed away Friday, Jan. 2, 2009, at Sentara Careplex Hospital, Hampton.

She was a member of Messick Baptist Church, and TOPS-Take Off Pounds Sensible. Barbara also opened her home up to the USO at Thanksgiving for soldiers that did not have family in the area. She was a good wife, mother, Nana, neighbor, and friend to all.

Barbara was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse W. Dryden; a son, Michael W. Dryden; her mother, Henrietta Smith; a brother, Wilson "Bill" Smith; and a sister, Amelia Claussen.

She is survived by her beloved daughter, Elina Burns and husband, Ronnie; eight grandchildren, Joshua W. Burns, Carolyn "C. J." Burns, Jennifer N. Ferguson, Ashlee Mangum, Jamie Mangum, Richie Dow, Crystal Dow, and Rebecca Grube; four brothers and sisters-in-law, Marie and Bennie T. Bryden, and Norma and Howard Abston; four nieces, Jeannie Dryden, Kellie Dryden, Lillian Fisher, and Shelia Smith; three nephews, Bennie Dryden Jr., Jamie Abston, and Lee Abston; four great-nieces; and four great-nephews.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at Claytor Rollins Funeral Home, Poquoson and other times at the family home or her daughter's home. A "Celebration of Life" service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in the funeral home chapel by the Rev. H. Ben Topping Jr. Burial will follow at Parklawn Memorial Park, Hampton.
