Obituary
Funeral services will be held on Monday, April 23, 2012 at a 10:00 AM Mass of Christian Burial in St. Edmond Catholic Church in Lafayette for Bernice "Bernie" LeJeune, 92, who died on Friday, April 20, 2012 at his residence in Lafayette with his wife and daughter by his side.

Entombment will be in Calvary Mausoleum.

Reverend Gilbert J. Dutel, Pastor of St. Edmond Catholic Church, will be the Celebrant of the funeral Mass and will conduct the funeral services. Reverend Gary Schexnayder, Pastor of St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church will concelebrate.

Born on May 3, 1919 in Church Point, Louisiana, Bernie was the son of the late Clemence Thibodeaux LeJeune and Cleobule LeJeune. He was a proud member of the United States Army and prior to World War II, Bernie served in the Civilian Conservation Camp in Abbeville, Louisiana. A veteran of World War II, Bernie attained the rank of Corporal and saw action in the North African and European Theaters of War (Oran, Algeria, Casa Blanca, Morocco and Naples, Italy). He had the ability to speak French fluently and served as an interpreter between the French and American armies. While stationed in Brooklyn. New York, Bernie met his wife, Evelyn Ball and they were married on December 3, 1949. Bernie and Evelyn were married for over 62 years and lived in New York for 25 of those years.

He was discharged from the United States Army in 1945 and went to work in Chicago, Illinois for International Harvestor. He served in the Merchant Marines for a short period of time and was employed by J.P. Stevens in New York City from 1949 to 1956. In 1957 Bernie joined the United States Postal Service. He worked at Brooklyn's main post office first as a mail handler and then as a systems technician. In 1975, he transferred from the Brooklyn Post Office to the Lafayette Main Post Office. As a result of this transfer, Bernie moved to Lafayette with his wife, daughter and his wife's parents. He worked for the post office for 27 years before retiring in 1984.

Bernie had an associate degree in Applied Arts and Sciences from New York City Community College. In conjunction with his postal career, he attended the University of Oklahoma at Norman, Oklahoma on numerous occasions. Bernie was very proud of his Acadian heritage and once had served as a volunteer tour guide at Vermilionville. Bernie always looked forward to Le Festival Acadien held each year in Lafayette's Girard Park. It was here at the festival where he enjoyed meeting tourists/teachers from Francophone countries. Over the years, Bernie established many lasting friendships in this manner. Bernie was an independent person who lived life on his own terms. He loved studying French grammar and reading the French newspaper, France-Amerique. In addition, he was always doing odd jobs around his house such as his own plumbing repairs and maintenance.

Bernie is survived by his wife, Evelyn LeJeune; one daughter, Patricia LeJeune Bopp of Lafayette; one sister, Evon LeJeune Melancon and her husband, Norris of Church Point; several nieces and nephews; several great nieces and nephews; as well as numerous great-great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Elmire LeJeune Meche and her husband, Vorice and Amy LeJeune Bihm and her husband, Ivy; two brothers, Leo LeJeune and his wife, Edna and his beloved and best friend, Wallace LeJeune; two nephews, Al Meche (Godchild) and Herbert Bihm; and one great nephew, Chad Doucet.

Martin & Castille - Downtown, 330 St. Landry Street, Lafayette, Louisiana was in charge of services.
