Known as "Charles Carroll of Doughoregan," he was the son of Charles Carroll of Homewood and Harriet Chew, and he was the grandson and heir of Charles Carroll of Carrollton. First attended Mount St. Mary's College in Emmitsburg, MD, then in 1817 his grandfather sent him (with his cousin, Charles Carroll Harper) to study at St. Stanislaus College in Paris, France. In 1821 he returned and entered Harvard College as a sophomore with the Class of 1823. On the eve of his commencement ceremony, however, he was expelled (along with 37 or so of his fellow seniors) from Harvard College for taking part in the "Great Rebellion" -- his degree would not be given to him until 1855 but was dated "as of 1823." Also known as "Colonel Carroll," but his military experience is unclear. He died of "dropsy" in 1862 after several years of illness.
