Ruth Wallace Mitchell, age 84, passed away on Sunday, April 22, 2012. She was born in Charlottesville, Virginia on May 25, 1927 and was a longtime resident, since 1966, of Hampton, Virginia.

Ruth was a member of Ivy Memorial Baptist Church since 1974 where she sang in the choir for many years and was on a number of committees. Her Sunday School class was the Joyful Gleaners. She graduated from Newport News High School in 1945 and attended junior college in Bryn Mawr in Pennsylvania for two years. Ruth was an avid bowler and golfer.

She retired from Langley Air Force Base as the Wing Historian for the 1st Tactical Fighter Wing in May 25 1982.

Preceding her in rest are her parents, Rufus Wallace and Mary Lillian Shipp Mitchell; sisters, Hazel M. Brogan and Juanita M. Granger; nephew, M. Hawthorne Granger, III. Surviving members of her family include her nephews, Tom Brogan and wife Mary Jean, Robert Granger and wife Cynthia; niece, Marcia McQuitty and husband David, Rita Hitchler and husband Mike; many grand-nieces and nephews; and Marvine H. Windle, best friend.

Special thanks goes out to Gale Bristow, and her staff of home care-givers, especially Gina Wilkinson, Kim Parks, Diana Lemons, Tina Simone, and Cathy Shackleford, Sentara Careplex, James River Convalescent Center and the Odyssey Hospice Group.

Memorial donations may be made in Ruth's name to Ivy Memorial Baptist Church, Hampton, Virginia.

The family will receive friends on Friday, April 27, 2012, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM, at Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home. Following the visitation, a service remembering Ruth's life will be held at 11:00 AM in the funeral home chapel. Interment will be in Parklawn Memorial Park.
