The memorial service for Jean Marie Smith, Medford, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 21, at the Medford Congregational Church. She died Thursday, Feb. 13 at Rogue Valley Medical Center.
She was born on June 23, 1928 in Hammond, Indiana to Wilford S. and Mamie Grindle. In 1969 she married Hardin E. Smith, who preceded her in death in 1999. Jean and her family moved to the Rogue Valley in 1971.
Jean pursued a lifetime career in Library Science, eventually being named Josephine County Library Director, a position she held from 1979 until her retirement in 1985.
For her contribution to her field she was recognized as an Honorary Life Member by the Oregon Library Association.
After her retirement, Jean devoted herself to her family and will always be remembered as a loving mother and grandmother.
Jean enjoyed reading and participating in the activities of the Southern Oregon Historical Society, for which she served two terms on the Board of Trustees.
Survivors include two sons, Mark Walker of Central Point, and David Walker of Medford; step-daughter Barbara Silva, Medford; and four grandchildren, Bethany, Adam, Samantha and Tom. One grandchild, Ben, preceded her in death.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Josephine County Library, 200 N.W. C Street, Grants Pass, OR 97526 for the acquisition of new books.
