DUPONT M'PHAIL DIED LAST NIGHT
DEATH CAME AFTER A VERY SHORT ILLNESS AND WAS A GREAT SHOCK TO HIS FRIENDS
~~Mr. C. D. McPhail died at his residence, No. 1315 Fourth avenue, at 7:30 o'clock last night, after a very short illness. The news of his death was a great shock to his friends and will sadden all who knew him for he was one of the most popular young men in the city and was held in the highest esteem for his fine character.
~~Mr. McPhail had been in ill health for some time, but pluckily kept at his work, and not until Monday did he go home, his condition becoming so serious that he realized that he required medical attention. It developed that he was suffering with typhoid fever, and probably had been on the verge of the attack for some time. In addition to this, kidney trouble of an acute nature developed and an operation was deemed necessary and was performed Thursday. The operation was in itself successful, but did not avail to save the life of the young man and he passed quietly away last night after having been in a dying condition for a number of hours.
~~DuPont McPhail as he was generally known by his friends, was the son of Mr. and Mrs. J.D. McPhail, Sr. and was reared in Columbus. Besides his parents, he is survived by his heartbroken wife, a little son, DuPont, and a little daughter, Emily and also by the following brothers and sisters: Mr. Oscar G. McPhail of this city, Mr. James McPhail of Durham, N.C.; Messers. John and Guy McPhail, of Montgomery and Misses Jessie and Juliette McPhail, of this city. He was 30 years of age.
~~Mr. McPhail had been employed as bookkeeper in the offices of Goldens Foundry A Machine Company continually for 11 years, with the exception of a year or two, when he was engaged in the grocery business. He was an expert bookkeeper and was faithful to his work, to which he gave painstaking attention. His employees were devoted to him, and his death comes as a perpetual loss to them, and to his associates, in the office, who all loved him for his saintly disposition and staunch qualities. Mr. McPhail was a member of St. Paul Methodist church. He was a member of R.E. Lee Lodge Knights of Pythias, of Mount Hermon Lodge F & A.M., of Creek tribe of Red Men, and of the Odd Fellows. He was a member of the Uniform Rank of Knights of Pythias and at one time had been an officer in the local company of that order. He was popular in lodge circles, as he was elsewhere, and among all who know him, there is deep grief over his sudden demise.
~~The funeral services will take place at some hour tomorrow. Mr. McPhail's brothers who lived out of the city are expected to arrive in Columbus today.
