Composer. Born in Nagykanizsa, Hungary, he moved to the United States in 1909 and settled in New York. He started working as a pianist in cafes, formed his own European salon and light music orchestra in 1912. Offered a job to compose some musical scores by Broadway producer Lee Shubert, his first work was "The Whirl of the World" (1914). Employed as Broadway house composer, he composed 275 numbers for seventeen musicals and revues by 1917. From the 1920s to 1930s, he wrote operettas and wrote the scores for several movies to include "Viennese Nights" (1930) and "The Night is Young" (1934). In the 1940s, he toured America with his own orchestra and regularly appeared on radio. He died in New York City and was posthumously inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1970.
