A man who loved music and his family. He played several instruments and enjoyed singing songs in a beautiful clear tenor voice. His nick name among his Portuguese countrymen was "The German" due to his head full of bright red hair. He was a native of Sao Miguel Island and came to America through Boston to live in Fall River, Massachusetts and later to move to Warren, Rhode Island with his family. He had five children and seven grandchildren, only surviving to see six. Noted for his witty sense of humor, he was a skilled hunter, never shooting an animal unless it was running in flight saying, "It's not fair to the animal to not give it a chance to run." He hunted to feed his family during The Depression and continued to do so after the economic crisis and went on to teach his superior huntsman skills to several male family members. He was a master gardener who was noted to have extensive skill in nearly evry type of horticulture. His most revered were the topiaries that he helped design for the "Green Animals" exhibit still open to the public in Posrtsmouth, RI. He kept and enjoyed the traditions of his native country and he is remembered to have been the first preson to make a joke, laugh and be ready for a good time.
