Found in The State 11 July 1949: Graveside services for Barry Brooks, 62, who died Saturday evening at his residence in Charleston, 116 Rutledge avenue, will be conducted at 5 o'clock this afternoon from Elmwood cemetery, the Rev. George Alexander officiating. Mr. Brooks, a bachelor, was born in August, 1886, the son of Capt. John Hampden Brooks of Cambridge and Jane Adams Brooks of Eastover. He was a nephew of U. S. Representative Preston Brooks, who was a prominent legislator in ante-bellum days. He was a resident of Columbia for a number of years, when he was connected with the state comptrollers office and later with the W. (hard to read initial) Ryan Auditing company. Formerly, he had son undergraduate work at Clemson college. After leaving Columbia in 1942, he became a manager of the William Johnson Coal company in Charleston. Survivors include one brother, Lowden Brooks of Greenwood, and one sister, Mrs. James R. Johnson of Charleston. Also surviving are numerous nephews and nieces.
