Chauncey David Cole was the son of Tunis Peter Cole (1848 - 1932) and Mary Hitchcock Cole (1854 - 1889). His mother died when he was a mere toddler and he thereafter relied on his elder sister Lena (married Skiff) for his maternal needs. He spent his youth in and around Gloversville, in Fulton County New York helping his father, who was a stone mason. He thereafter became a travelling salesman and in April 1917 he married Gertrude Elizabeth Murtagh Laden (1891 - 1975) in Norwich, New York.
His wife was the widow of John Laden, who had died of Tuberculosis a year or so earlier. She had two young daughters, Margaret (married McCarthy, Pasqualina and Majewski) (1912 - 1961) and Mary (married Duffy) (1913 - 2005) and Chauncey became a doting stepfather from that point onward. The couple had five more children during their nearly fifty years of marriage including Mildred (married Vitallo and Desrosiers)(1918 - 2012), Chauncey David Junior (1919 - 1990), Eugene Walter (1921 - 1994), Leona (married Updike) (1925 - 1995) and Joan (married Frederico, Moreau and DiLorenzo) (1932 - 2010). Both sons served in the US Army during the Second World War.
Chauncey became a house painter during the years immediately following WW1, and remained so throughout the remainder of his working years. During the Second World War he obtained a job in his profession at the Schenectady, New York Army Depot. In 1957 he moved with his wife and several other family members to Granada Hills, California and enjoyed his retirement.
He is fondly remembered by his grandchildren to this day and can trace his American ancestry to Barent Jacobsen Cole in New Netherlands in 1624 as well as to Catoneras, the Pocahontas of Long Island and to the Mayflower through the Hitchcock side.
