Painter. Born Marie Clementine Valadon, the illegitimate daughter of a Parisian laundress, she was a trapeze artist and a model for Renoir, Degas and Toulouse-Lautrec before turning to painting. The brash color of her early canvases anticipated the Fauvist movement by more than a decade, and her female nude studies created a stir over their unflattering realism. In 1894 Valadon became the first woman admitted to the Societe Nationale des Beaux-Arts. She was the lover of composer Erik Satie and the mother of painter Maurice Utrillo.
