Former Apostolic Nuncio in Slovakia and Archbishop of the Titular See of Carpi, Monsigor Luigi Dossena was born in Campagnola Cremasca, Province of Cremona, Italy, on May 28, 1925, and was ordained to the priesthood for the Diocese of Crema at 25 years of age on March 25, 1951.

Entering the diplomatic service of the Holy See, after concluding his studies at the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy in 1955, Dossena served in various nunciatures and delegations including those of Nicaragua, Honduras and Washington. Appointed Apostolic Pro-Nuncio in Korea by Pope Paul VI at 47 years of age, he received his episcopal consecration with the Titular See of Carpi on March 25, 1973, from Cardinal Jean Villot, assisted by Archbishop Duraisamy Simon Lourdusamy and Bishop Carlo Manziana CO.

On October 24, 1978, Monsignor Dossena was named Apostolic Pro-Nuncio in Cape Verde, Niger, Sénégal, Burkina Faso, and Apostolic Delegate to Mali, Guinea-Bissau and Mauritania. He resigned the posts of Niger and Burkina Faso in 1979, when Monsignor Justo Mullor García was named as their Pro-Nuncio.

Appointed Apostolic Pro-Nuncio in Mali on June 3, 1980, successively he was named Apostolic Nuncio in Peru on December 30, 1985, and Apostolic Nuncio in Slovakia on March 2, 1994. In this position, Dossena prepared the basic treaty between Slovakia and the Holy See. Retiring from office at 75 years of age on February 8, 2001, Archbishop Dossena passed away in his native Campagnola Cremasca in the morning of September 9, 2007, aged 82. A street in Campagnola has been since named after him.
