Prince, Duke and Count. Son of King Gustaf VI Adolf and Crown Princess Margareta. He was created Duke of Dalecarlia at birth. Bernadotte Dynasty. Married below royalty in 1946 and was then forbidden to use his titles in Sweden, where he was called Mr Carl Johan Bernadotte. Became a businessman. Granted the title of Count of Wisborg in 1951 in the nobility of Luxembourg and then also called Prince Bernadotte there by his relative, Grand Duchess Charlotte who was the Luxembourg head of state. In Sweden, the special name Bernadotte af Wisborg also was approved by that country's king and developed among certain relatives. For the rest of his lifetime, he was not considered Swedish royalty, but after death he is so, as per standard historical practice (see for example Edward VIII of England). He was buried on May 15 2012 after funeral services the previous day in Båstad, Sweden, where he had resided, and a memorial service at the Palace Chapel in Stockholm just preceding the Solna interment.
