He immigrated with his family in 1852 by way of the Great Lakes, where the steamship they were on (The Atlantic)was sunk in Lake Erie in a ship collision on the 20th of August. All in the family survived the accident.

He enlisted as a private in Company H, Unassigned 22nd Regiment, during the Civil War, 5 Jan 1865-17 May 1865. He was named Knut Sandness in the burial records, from the name of the home farm on Windingstad in Valdres, Norway.Knud Sandnaes (Sandnos) was the son of Thomas Iverson and Ingelborg Laradatter. Immigrated 1852. Two Rivers Town 1855,Two Rivers Tannery 1856; farmer in Gibson 1870.
