Karen J. Schockmel, 69, of Henderson, passed away May 25, 2012. She was born March 14, 1943, the daughter of Fred Acker and Dorothy Parrott Acker, in Fort Wayne, Ind. Karen graduated from Elmhurst High School in Fort Wayne in 1961 and from Ball State University in Muncie, Ind. in 1965, receiving a bachelor's degree in education. Karen was an elementary school teacher in Lompoc, Calif. for 37 years from 1965-2002. She married her husband, Gerald Schockmel, in 1967, in Lompoc. Karen retired from teaching in 2002 and she and her husband, Gerald, moved to Henderson in 2003. Karen was preceded in death by her father and mother, Fred and Dorothy Acker. Karen is survived by her husband, Gerald Schockmel; sister, Joan Acker Baumann; nephew, Kip Baumann; and niece, Alicia Baumann Power. Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 30, at Palm Mortuary, 7600 S. Eastern Ave., Las Vegas, NV 89123. Burial following at Palm Valley View Memorial Park.
