Samuel was the son of John Emery of South Thomaston, Knox County, Maine and Margaret Crie Emery of Matinicus Island. Margaret and John were married on 20 November 1834. Margaret and John had five children. They were: Susan E. Emery was born on 30 September 1835; Richard A. Emery was born on 13 November 1837 (died young?); Richard B. Emery was born in 1839 (died young?); Bradford Alden Emery was born on 18 April 1840; Samuel A. Emery was born in 1841. All the children were born in South Thomaston, Knox County, Maine.
According to Phyllis Hope Additon Russell (grand niece) in October of 1972, Samuel was " sea captain in the Civil War. Died at home of fever".
