Gen William Duncan Smith

Civil War Confederate Brigadier General. He graduated from West Point in 1846, was commissioned an officer in the 2nd U.S. Dragoons and served in the Mexican-American War. At the start of the Civil War, he resigned his commission and excepted an appointment as a Major in the Confederate 1st Georgia Regular Infantry Regiment. He was promoted Colonel in command of the 20th Georgia Regiment in July, 1861 and was confirmed Brigadier General assigned to the 1st Brigade of the Confederate District of Georgia in the Department of South Carolina and Georgia in March, 1862. During this period, he led a brigade at the Battle of Secessionville and after was then given command of the First District of South Carolina, where served until his death from yellow fever. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
