Leonard Richard Bumgarner, age 84, of Catawba passed away peacefully Sunday, April 8, 2007 at his residence after a short illness. Born December 20, 1922 in Catawba County, he was the son of the late Charles Franklin Bumgarner and the late Bessie Keever Bumgarner. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran of WWII. Mr. Bumgarner retired from J.C. Penney Warehouse in Stateville in 1985. He was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Catawba. In addition to his parents, two brothers, Joe and Lewis Bumgarner, preceded him in death. He is survived by: Wife of 66 years: Nadene Arndt Bumgarner of the home 3 Sons: R. Allen Bumgarner and wife Janice of Catawba, Danny W. Bumgarner of Catawba, Edgar F. Bumgarner and wife Theresa of Claremont Daughter: Dixie B. Parker and husband Keith Parker of Newton 8 Brothers: Wade, Howard, Paul, Robert, Clyde, Terrell, Harry, and Don Bumgarner 2 Sisters: Bonnie B. Laney, Ruth B. Haynes 7 Grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, April 10, 2007 at 4:00 p.m. at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Catawba with Rev. Greg Alms officiating. Burial will follow in Providence Memorial Cemetery in Catawba honored with military graveside rites performed by American Legion Post 16. Serving as pallbearers: Allen Brown, Michael Bumgarner, Barry Bumgarner, Mark Bailey, Rusty Wallace, Kermit Kale, and honorary pallbearer, Mark Bumgarner. The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 2:30-3:45 p.m. at the church prior to the service. Memorials may be made to: Redeemer Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 187, Catawba, NC 28609 or Palliative Care and Hospice of Catawba Valley, 3975 Robinson Road, Newton, NC 28658. Burke Mortuary in Newton is serving the Bumgarner family.
