Ruth Saugstad was the youngest child of John and Mina (Bangen) Saugstad. In 1936, she married Arve M. Mortrude, from Chicago, Illinois, a professional ball player. After some moving about, they eventually moved to California in 1941. Arve was employed by Douglas Aircraft in Long Beach, California, until his retirement. They were the parents of three daughters, Jana Ruth, Susan Arva and Mary Beth.
