Immigrated as a young man with his parents and sister to what is now Port Sanilac, MI with Cook and Thomson families.
Served during the Civil War in the 116 NY Infantry & lost an arm in the Battle of Port Hudson. He went back home to Port Sanilac, married, and was appointed postmaster in a nearby village in 1866. He worked for the census bureau in Washington DC for a year before becoming an employee of the Federal Land Office for the next 44 years.
From his obituary:
"...Gentle and benign in manner, kindly in thought and speech and socially inclined, Captain Wahly made many fast friends...Captain Wahly was a second division player in the roque championships and for his years and handicap of only one arm, played a creditable game and was always a formidable antagonist. He held the second Van Wickle medal several years ago..."
