CHARLES "CARL" GUSTAVUS BILICKE ~

Newspaper articles vary: i.e, providing both Charles & Carl for Mr. Bilicke's first name. Most historical records show some variation of Gustavus. California Voter Registration records for Stanislaus County provide the name Charles G. Bilicke for the time period when he was associated with the Ross Hotel in Modesto; as well as, voter registration for Los Angeles County for the time period when he was associated with the Hollenbeck Hotel. I do not have a birth record for Mr. Bilicke.

PLEASE NOTE: The Original Article which ran December 07, 1896 in the Los Angeles Herald, provided an incorrect date for Mr. Bilicke's birth. The mistake was picked-up through the wire by the San Francisco Call.

THE LOS ANGELES HERALD ~ Monday Morning, December 7, 1896
"A WELL KNOWN HOTEL MAN ~ Passes To The Great Beyond
Death of C.G. Bilicke

Mr. Carl Gustave Bilicke, one of the firm A.C. Bilicke & Co., proprietors of the Hollenbeck Hotel, died at three oclock yesterday morning.

Mr. Bilicke was born in Brandenburg, Germany, August 29, 1842. He came to America in 1851 and to California in 1852. In 1854 he moved to Oregon, being a Pioneer in that state, and from thence to Idaho, again a Pioneer, in 1862. He went into general business in Idaho and accumulated a fortune, retiring from business life in 1869, and locating in San Francisco in the same year, where his children were educated. During the crash following the death of W.C. Ralston and the failure of the Bank of California he lost everything, and once again began life anew. He removed to Arizona and stared a general store, and drifted into the hotel business. His bright and sympathetic smile has brought many a guest to his hotels, and his genial nature made him admirably adapted to the hotel business, in which he has been engaged for twenty years. He was a master mason, and will be buried with masonic honors.

Mr. Bilicke leaves a wife and two children ~A.C. Bilicke of the Hollenbeck Hotel in this city, and Mrs. O. McHenry wife of the banker of Modesto. The traveling public will learn of his decease with great regret. The funeral notice will be found in another column."
